Let me ask you how do you perceive an average black person to be? By perception I ask if someone tells you that he or she is black on the call and you make an imaginary picture of them in your mind how well or not so well do they appear inside your head? Do they wear pants below their hipline? Do they speak in a specific manner? Do they seem dumb or uneducated? Then I guess you have it all wrong because that is not what an average black looks or speaks like.
Blacks too are very educated and very well versed but unfortunately the wrong image being broadcasted over and over again on our media has sent such a negative image world over that whenever someone talks about black there is simply one image that pops up in everyone’s mind. This woman Ernestine Johnson speaks in her poem ‘The Average Black Girl’ and this is where she is breaking into the show Aresnio. I mean the way she gave the performance might have touched so many hearts of her community that you might not even think of it. It was as if she wrote it with all her heart and soul.
